Can I check my bees? is run by Bickerton Beekeeping Limited. We want to know whether the site is useful, and that is all. We don't sell data, show adverts or build profiles of you.

Questions, or want your data deleted? Email barney@bickerton.co.uk.

Looking up the weather

When you type a town or postcode, your browser sends it straight to postcodes.io or Open-Meteo to find the place and its forecast. If you use the location button, your browser sends your coordinates to the same two services. We don't see or keep any of this unless you accept analytics (below), and even then we only keep the postcode district (the first half, such as SN15) and the place name, never your full postcode or exact location.

The date you last opened your hives is kept in your own browser and never sent anywhere.

Analytics, only if you say yes

If you click Accept on the cookie banner, we use PostHog on its EU servers to see how the site is used. It records:

  • pages viewed, buttons clicked, and roughly how long you stayed;
  • your browser, device type and approximate location (town or region, worked out from your IP address; PostHog is set not to store the address itself);
  • the place and postcode district you looked up, and the answer the site gave;
  • a recording of how the page was used (mouse movement, scrolling, clicks). Anything typed into the page is hidden in recordings, and recordings are deleted after 30 days.

The legal basis is your consent. Other analytics data is kept for up to two years. If you say no thanks, PostHog is never loaded. You can change your mind at any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of any page.

Short links

Links on cicmb.buzz (for example cicmb.buzz/SN15) go straight to a search on this site. When one is opened we count the click without setting any cookies: we record the link, the website it was clicked from, the country and region, and the type of browser. To count unique clicks we use a scrambled code made from your IP address and browser that changes every day and can't be turned back into either. Your IP address itself isn't stored. We do this because we have a legitimate interest in knowing which links people use.

What's stored in your browser

cookieConsentYour answer to the cookie banner. Kept until you clear it.
lastInspectionThe date you last opened your hives, if you entered one. Never leaves your browser.
ph_…_posthogPostHog's cookie, set only if you accept analytics. It recognises a returning visit. Lasts up to a year.

Other companies involved

  • Cloudflare hosts the site and the short links, and handles the network traffic (including your IP address) to deliver them and protect them from attack.
  • postcodes.io and Open-Meteo answer the place and forecast lookups described above.
  • PostHog provides the analytics, only if you accept.

Your rights

You can ask to see the data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, or object to how we use it. Email barney@bickerton.co.uk. Because we don't know who you are, it helps to tell us roughly when you used the site and from which device. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
