Beekeeping in January

When you do open up in January, you are looking for nothing inside โ€” heft for weight and make sure the entrance is clear.

Can I inspect my bees in January?

No. From November to February the roof stays on, however mild it is. On a warm day the bees will fly; that is your cue to heft the hive and check the entrance, not to open up.

Jobs for January

  • Do not open the hive. Heft it: if it feels light, put fondant on over the feed hole.
  • Oxalic acid (trickle or vapour) on a cold, broodless day if you did not do it in December.
  • Keep the entrance clear of dead bees and snow. Mouse guard and woodpecker netting stay on.
  • Clean and repair kit, make up frames, order foundation before the spring rush.
